Resting in the Storm

Gospel: Mark 4: 35-41

The storm reveals our faith our lack thereof.  Consider the possible outcomes of the storm.  We can either survive the storm or die in it.  If we survive the storm, why would we be distressed in the midst of it? We fear not only the loss of our lives, but also the loss of our property.  We may survive the storm, but our stuff may be damaged, causing us distress and financial loss.  The attachment we have to our things causes us anxiety and fear.

But consider the fear we have about dying.  Why are we so afraid of death? Are there things in our life for which we have regret? Do we possibly have a fear of what we may face or feel before God? That too is very telling regarding our own faith life in the here and now.  If we are not at peace with dying it suggests attachments and regret, even though we claim that to be with God is the greatest of all possible outcomes in one's life.

Now consider the utter calm of Jesus in the boat.  Jesus is so calm that he is asleep, completely at ease in the midst of the wind and waves.  Jesus only becomes agitated when awakened by the disciples and their fear.  He rebukes his disciples for their lack of faith and for disturbing his peace.  Our task in the midst of storms is not to ask that they be removed but that we might have the faith and peace of Jesus in the midsst of them so that no matter its outcome we remain one with God alone.
